Disconnected.

I remember starting Nurses Against Violence Unite, Inc. I swore this was my mission in life, it still is but I will share with you how and why this mission is so important. We have a crisis that many are and not aware of and is creeping up on nursing and healthcare as a whole. The lack of mental health and addiction awareness and education. Not to sound bleak and negative but calling out the pattern that is making a gigantic wave comeback, and it isn’t COVID, possibly another variant called disconnection.

Oh, that is tough and horrible to say from a primarily positive and uplifting person but it is coming and the writing is on the wall. It was extremely upsetting when I saw the latest report grazing through the daily negative news and doomsday scenarios on the “boob tube” so the old-timers would say. Well, this boob was cringing with what I saw. Another bubble and it was just as how I have been predicting all of these years and in my curriculum for our Violence Prevention program with Holistic Crisis Prevention. I am not happy or gloating, I have been talking about this in blogs, and webinars for years, even teaching it for free.

Just like 2008, the great housing bubble, as we embark on the last day of the rent moratorium, this is where it starts. Growing up homeless, dropping out of the 9th grade to work 3 jobs due to being left behind, I do unfortunately see many sides of this equation. Medical and Nursing — healthcare in general cares for the measurable and things they can see during their assessment unless completely blatantly off behavior, such as delirium, it is hard to distinguish what is real, or made-up for the next fix. Growing up in nursing since I was 16 years old, I didn’t know or even have the clue about behaviors as I was living in my own bubble of Aspbergers, I had no clue people would have ulterior methods to living, all I knew was how to survive. Obviously I have grown a lot in my career as a nurse, have enough paper to wallpaper a 10x10 wall but this is precisely my point, I started this journey of forensics in 2010, as soon as I finished my ASN, because of something in my past that I needed to fill with my mother that unlocked so much of what happened to me and what is now happening in nursing, healthcare workers, and our patient population as a whole.

It is disgusting the staggering numbers of addicted, homeless, and now nurses leaving the floor from being physically and verbally abused by patients but Also those they turn to that are supposed to keep them safe, their employers. I find it equally deplorable that nursing education is dictated by those that are not even working on the units, with committees that report to the board of nursing with objective data…and if there is, why is there NO Data!?! Because nobody will report it due to retaliation of losing their jobs and being blacklisted thus nurses leaving to go work agencies due to the culture and incivility of those they work with. I won’t even talk about what has been happening to me as that is a whole other disaster. All I know is, somebody has to bring awareness to the pile of BS happening, professionally speaking of course, as we are not out of the woods anytime soon as this bubble hasn’t even burst yet.

The choice is ours, either we change this narrative or we can allow it to continue. Joining our movement helps fund uplifting events, marketing materials, and would love to be able to give out scholarships.
